Third king of the Toungoo Dynasty who assembled the largest empire in the history of Southeast Asia, conquering Siam, Lan Na, and Lan Xang (Laos) across three decades of military campaigns.

Biographical Record

Bayinnaung Kyawhtin Nawrahta (1516–1581) was a commoner who became the supreme general and brother-in-law of King Tabinshwehti. Following Tabinshwehti's assassination in 1550, Bayinnaung reclaimed the throne and launched sweeping campaigns of unification.

By 1569, Bayinnaung had conquered Upper Burma, the Shan states, Lan Na (Chiang Mai), the Ayutthaya Kingdom of Siam, and Lan Xang (Laos). He standardized weights, measures, and currency, banned animal sacrifices, and built the magnificent Kanbawzathadi Palace in Pegu.
