Archival Overview
Supreme Amenokal of the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg who firmly rejected French colonial plans to sever the Sahara from Algeria, pledging loyalty to independent Algeria in 1962.
Biographical Record
Cheikh Baye ag Akhamouk was the paramount Amenokal of the Kel Ahaggar Tuareg in southern Algeria. When French colonial authorities attempted in 1957 to partition the Sahara into a separate entity (OCRS) to deny independent Algeria its vast oil, gas, and territorial sovereignty, Baye ag Akhamouk made the historic decision to reject all partition proposals.
He declared that the Sahara had always been inextricably linked to the Algerian motherland. Following independence in 1962, he was elected to the Algerian National Assembly, working tirelessly with President Ben Bella and President Boumédiène to integrate health, education, and development in the far south.
