"I paint to sing with colors; my women do not weep, they celebrate life with birds and flowers."

Archival Overview

Self-taught Algerian painter and ceramicist whose dazzling, joyful gouaches of winged women, peacocks, and musical instruments captivated Paris at age sixteen, inspiring Pablo Picasso and André Breton.

Biographical Record

Born Fatma Haddad in Bordj El Kiffan near Algiers, orphaned at age five, she was taken in by French intellectual Marguerite Caminat. Baya began sculpting small clay figures of animals and women, which caught the attention of Parisian art dealer Aimé Maeght.

In 1947, at age sixteen, Baya held a sensational solo exhibition at the Galerie Maeght in Paris; André Breton wrote the lyrical catalogue preface, hailing her as a queen of Surrealism. Pablo Picasso spent months working alongside Baya at the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris in 1948, directly inspired by her vibrant, flat color planes and spontaneous decorative genius in his Women of Algiers series. Her works hang in the greatest modern art museums of the world.
