"When the youth dance to the fast rhythm of my strings, all the pain of the city disappears into the night."

Archival Overview

Electrifying guitarist and youth idol of 1960s Kinshasa, younger brother of Franco Luambo Makiadi, whose band Négro Succès dominated the soukous dancefloors with wild guitar riffs until his tragic death at 26.

Biographical Record

Bavon Siongo was born on May 27, 1944, in Sona-Bata. The younger brother of musical titan Franco Luambo Makiadi, Bavon chose not to live in his brother's shadow, joining Orchestre Négro Succès in the mid-1960s as lead guitarist.

With songs like 'Mambo La Reine', 'Sia Vola', and 'Lucie Boteyi', Bavon became the undisputed fashion and musical icon for Kinshasa's youth, rivaling Franco's OK Jazz. On August 5, 1970, after an argument, he crashed his car in Limete, dying instantly. His sudden death plunged Kinshasa into mass grief, inspiring Franco's heartbreaking tribute song 'Kinsiona'.
