Archival Overview
Ancient Greek explorer and monarch who, guided by the Delphic Oracle, led colonists from the Aegean island of Thera to North Africa to found Cyrene, establishing the prosperous Battiad Dynasty and Hellenic civilization in Libya.
Biographical Record
Battus, born Aristotle according to Pindar, was afflicted with a severe speech impediment that prompted him to seek counsel from the Delphic Oracle. Pythia commanded him to establish a colony in the fertile highlands of Libya, leading a group of settlers across the Mediterranean to establish Cyrene around 631 BCE.
Battus ruled wisely for four decades, establishing harmonious treaties with neighboring Libyan tribes, securing vital agricultural lands, and constructing foundational temples that transformed Cyrene into one of the greatest centers of art, philosophy, and trade in the ancient Mediterranean.
