Biographical Record

Basavanna (1134–1196 CE) served as prime minister to King Bijjala II of Kalyani, using his high office to launch an egalitarian spiritual revolution.

In his immortal Vachana poetry, he proclaimed that 'work is worship' (Kayakave Kailasa) and created the Anubhava Mantapa, where men and women of all castes debated spirituality as equals.
