Archival Overview

Jewish-Dutch philosopher of radical brilliance whose Ethics set forth a pantheistic monism identifying God with Nature (Deus sive Natura), laying the foundation for modern secular democracy.

Biographical Record

Baruch Spinoza (1632–1677) was born into a Sephardic Portuguese family in Amsterdam. Excommunicated (*cherem*) by the Jewish community in 1656 for his radical theological inquiries, Spinoza turned down prestigious university professorships to preserve his intellectual independence, earning a modest living grinding optical lenses.

His geometric masterpiece, Ethics (*Ethica Ordine Geometrico Demonstrata*), established substance monism: there is only one infinite substance in the universe, which is simultaneously God and Nature (*Deus sive Natura*). His *Theological-Political Treatise* (1670) defended freedom of speech and democracy as essential for state prosperity.
