Archival Overview
Circassian military commander who founded the Burji (Circassian) Mamluk Dynasty of Egypt in 1382, courageously defying the conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) and constructing one of the finest architectural complexes on Al-Mu'izz Street.
Biographical Record
Brought to Egypt as a Circassian Mamluk, Barquq displayed exceptional political acumen and military skill, rising to become atabeg (commander-in-chief) before seizing the throne in 1382, overthrowing the Bahri Mamluk order.
When Timur devastated western Asia and demanded Mamluk submission, Barquq executed Timur's envoys, formed an anti-Timurid alliance with Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I, and defended Syrian borders. His funerary complex in Cairo's Northern Cemetery remains a masterpiece of Islamic stonework.
