Biographical Record
Prince Michael Andreas Barclay de Tolly (1761–1818) was a Russian Field Marshal and Minister of War of Scottish-German descent whose strategic vision and moral fortitude saved the Russian Empire in 1812. Entering Russian military service in 1776, Barclay de Tolly conducted the daring winter crossing of the frozen Gulf of Bothnia to capture Umeå during the Finnish War in 1809.
As Minister of War, Barclay de Tolly recognized that no European army could defeat Napoleon's 600,000-man Grande Armée in open battle. Despite fierce chauvinistic abuse and accusations of treason from Russian nobility for retreating, Barclay stood firm, executing a disciplined scorched-earth withdrawal into the interior of Russia that exhausted and starving the French invaders. Vindicated after the fall of Moscow, he was appointed supreme commander of the Russian-Prussian coalition in 1813, leading Allied armies through Leipzig and into Paris in 1814.
