Archival Overview

Beloved figure skater who won Canada's first individual Winter Olympic figure skating gold medal in 1948, celebrated nationally as "Canada's Sweetheart."

Biographical Record

Barbara Ann Scott began skating at age seven at the Minto Skating Club in Ottawa. Combining rigorous athletic discipline with graceful lyricism, Scott mastered compulsory school figures with unmatched geometric perfection, winning four Canadian national championships and two European championships.

At the 1948 Winter Olympic Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland, skating on outdoor ice rutted by hockey players, the nineteen-year-old Scott delivered a flawless, sparkling free skate to win the gold medal—the first and only Canadian woman to win Olympic gold in individual figure skating. She was inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame and made an Officer of the Order of Canada.
