"A machine made with knowledge performs the work of many hands; mechanical ingenuity is the realization of geometric principles in living brass."

Archival Overview

Three brilliant Persian brothers (Jafar Muhammad, Ahmad, and Al-Hasan) of the House of Wisdom in Baghdad who authored the 850 CE 'Book of Ingenious Devices', inventing over one hundred automated hydraulic machines, feedback valves, and programmable instruments.

Biographical Record

The Banu Musa brothers were educated under Caliph Al-Ma'mun in Baghdad. Financing expeditions to the Byzantine Empire to collect Greek scientific manuscripts, they translated Archimedes, Apollonius, and Hero of Alexandria while pioneering original engineering.

In their landmark 850 CE work 'Kitab al-Hiyal' (Book of Ingenious Devices), Ahmad invented programmable automata, self-regulating oil lamps, trick drinking vessels, the world's first automated flute player driven by steam and interchangeable pins (the earliest programmable machine), and conical feedback valves that anticipated modern automation.
