Archival Overview
Towering Cape Verdean writer, poet, and philologist who co-founded the seminal 'Claridade' literary review and authored 'Chiquinho', the founding novel of Cape Verdean literature.
Biographical Record
Baltasar Lopes da Silva was born on April 23, 1907, in Caleijao on the island of Sao Nicolau. Graduating in law and Romance philology from the University of Lisbon, he returned to Cape Verde as a beloved teacher and rector of the Liceu Gil Eanes in Mindelo.
In 1936, alongside Manuel Lopes and Jorge Barbosa, he founded the literary journal Claridade ('Clarity'), which emancipated Cape Verdean writing from Portuguese mimicry by grounding literature in the archipelago's Creole language, drought realities, and migratory soul. Under the pseudonym Osvaldo Alcantara, he wrote evocative poetry, but his 1947 novel Chiquinho stands as the immortal national epic of Cape Verdean youth, education, and emigration.
