Biographical Record

Appointed Peshwa by Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj at age twenty following his father's death, Baji Rao I (1700–1740) was the supreme military commander of the Maratha Confederacy. He declared: 'Let us strike at the trunk of the withering Mughal tree, and the branches will fall off by themselves.'

Baji Rao moved Maratha light cavalry at staggering speeds of up to 40 miles a day without baggage trains. In 1728, he outmaneuvered Nizam-ul-Mulk of Hyderabad at the Battle of Palkhed, starving his forces into unconditional surrender without firing artillery.
