Biographical Record
Born a Kipchak Turk on the Eurasian steppes, al-Zahir Baibars (c. 1223–1277) was sold into slavery and purchased by Sultan as-Salih Ayyub. In 1250, during the Seventh Crusade, Baibars orchestrated the ambush at Mansurah and defeated King Louis IX of France at Fariskur, capturing the French king.
On September 3, 1260, Baibars commanded the vanguard that lured Kitbuqa's Mongol army into the historic ambush at the Battle of Ain Jalut in Palestine, inflicting the Mongols' first permanent defeat. Ascending the throne, he captured the impregnable Crusader fortress of Krak des Chevaliers and Antioch.
