Biographical Record
Bai Juyi passed the imperial examinations with distinction and served as a high-ranking imperial censor and governor of Hangzhou and Suzhou, where he built causeways to benefit commoners. He believed literature had an urgent moral duty to speak for the oppressed, purposefully crafting poems so clear that common laborers and elderly villagers could understand them.
His narrative ballad 'Song of Everlasting Regret' (Chang Hen Ge), depicting the tragic love between Emperor Xuanzong and Consort Yang Guifei, became one of the most widely memorized and influential poems in Chinese, Korean, and Japanese history.
