Biographical Record
Bahi Ladgham (1913–1998) was educated at Sadiki College and joined the Neo-Destour party in his youth. In 1951, he was dispatched to New York to head the Tunisian Information Office, successfully placing the Tunisian question before the UN Security Council and General Assembly despite furious French diplomatic opposition.
Upon independence in 1956, Ladgham served as Bourguiba's closest executive lieutenant, holding the post of Secretary of State to the Presidency and Minister of Defense. From 1969 to 1970, he served as Tunisia's inaugural Prime Minister, and in September 1970 mediated the historic Cairo Arab Summit ceasefire ending 'Black September' in Jordan.
