Celebrated 13th-century Ayyubid court poet and chancellor known for his effortless, delicate lyricism and witty epigrams.
Biographical Record
Baha al-Din Zuhayr ibn Muhammad al-Muhallabi was born in the Hijaz and raised in Mosul before moving to Syria and Egypt, where he entered the service of the Ayyubid Sultan Al-Salih Ayyub. Appointed chief of the imperial chancery, he conducted diplomatic correspondence and state affairs with exceptional elegance.
Zuhayr was revered as one of the sweetest and most musical lyric poets of the medieval Arab world. Shunning dense archaic vocabulary in favor of refined, graceful, and conversational diction (sahl mumtani'), his diwan of love poems, compliments, and playful epigrams was translated into English verse by Cambridge scholar E.H. Palmer.
