Biographical Record
Badji Mokhtar was born in Annaba and was an ardent activist in the PPA, the MTLD, and the paramilitary Special Organization (OS). Arrested and tortured after the discovery of the OS in 1950, his iron resolve remained unbroken.
In June 1954, he took part in the historic Meeting of the 22 in Clos-Salembier (Algiers) that resolved upon armed insurrection. Appointed commander of the strategic Souk Ahras-Guelma sector, he led the November 1st attacks. On November 19, 1954, his command post in the Beni Salah forest was surrounded by colonial troops; Badji Mokhtar fought to the last bullet, becoming the very first member of the Historic 22 to sacrifice his life.
