Archival Overview
Third Zirid Emir who governed central North Africa from Achir, brother of Hammad ibn Buluggin and defender of Sanhaja unity.
Biographical Record
Badis ibn Ziri ascended the Zirid throne in 995 following the death of his father, Al-Mansur ibn Buluggin. Operating from the dynastic fortress of Achir in the Titteri mountains of central Algeria, he commanded formidable Sanhaja cavalry armies to secure order across the central Maghreb and repulse Zenata tribal insurrections.
To maintain internal dynastic harmony, Badis appointed his capable uncle Hammad governor of central Algeria. While Hammad eventually founded the separate Hammadid kingdom at the Qal'a, Badis demonstrated remarkable military energy and tactical resolve, remaining one of the foundational figures of medieval Algerian statecraft until his sudden death in 1016.
