Archival Overview
Supreme neoclassical Syrian poet of the 20th century whose majestic verse blended Sufi mysticism, erotic lyricism, and fiery patriotism.
Biographical Record
Mohammed Sulayman al-Ahmad, renowned by his pen name Badawi al-Jabal ('Bedouin of the Mountain'), was born into an illustrious Alawite scholarly family in the coastal mountains near Latakia. A passionate nationalist, he was repeatedly imprisoned and exiled by French Mandate authorities for his patriotic activism.
Badawi served as Minister of Health and Minister of Education in post-independence Syria, while producing neoclassical Arabic poetry of unmatched melodic splendor, linguistic grandeur, and philosophical depth. His elegies and odes, such as 'The Child' and 'The Twilight', earned him acclaim alongside Al-Jawahiri as one of the last towering masters of classical Arabic verse.
