Archival Overview
Revered ancient Indian sage who authored the foundational 'Brahma Sutras' (Vedanta Sutras), synthesizing the mystical teachings of the Upanishads into the bedrock of all Vedanta philosophy.
Biographical Record
Badarayana (c. 3rd century BCE), traditionally identified with Sage Vyasa, composed the 555 terse aphorisms of the Brahma Sutras at his Himalayan hermitage in Badarikashrama. The text systematically reconciled apparent contradictions across the diverse Upanishadic revelations regarding the nature of Ultimate Reality (Brahman).
His four-chapter work analyzed the coherence of Vedic knowledge (Samanvaya), answered philosophical objections from rival schools (Avirodha), detailed the spiritual disciplines of meditation (Sadhana), and described the nature of ultimate liberation (Phala). Every major Hindu philosopher wrote a commentary on his sutras to validate their school.
