Biographical Record
Born in Tlemcen, Bachir Yellès studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Algiers and Paris under Nicolas Untersteller. Following Algerian independence in 1962, he was appointed the first Algerian director of the École des Beaux-Arts d'Alger, rebuilding its faculty with icons like Khadda and Issiakhem.
In the late 1970s and 1980s, he coordinated the design and artistic execution of Maqam Echahid (The Martyrs' Memorial) and the Palace of Culture in Algiers, seamlessly merging monumental modern architecture with traditional Islamic decorative geometry.
