Archival Overview
Visionary Algerian communist leader, poet, and musicologist whose profound studies on Algerian Andalusian and Chaabi music preserved national heritage, while his poems documented the agony of political torture.
Biographical Record
Bachir Hadj Ali was born in the heart of the Casbah of Algiers. Succeeded Amar Ouzegane as Secretary-General of the Algerian Communist Party (PCA), he was instrumental in creating the 'Combattants de la Libération' guerrillas who integrated directly into the FLN during the War of Independence.
Imprisoned and horrifically tortured in 1965 for opposing the military coup, he wrote poignant poetry on cigarette papers and toilet paper, published as 'L'Arbitraire'. A sensitive musicologist, his foundational essays on the history and modal structures of Algerian classical music and Chaabi remain vital scholarly references.
