Biographical Record
A soldier in the Mahdist army who survived the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, Babikr Bedri recognized that Sudan's national rebirth lay in universal education. In 1907, with British authorities refusing funding, he opened the first school for girls in his own home in Rufa'a.
He expanded this model into an educational empire culminating in Ahfad University for Women in Omdurman, the premier women's university in Africa and the Arab world, transforming modern Sudanese society.
