Archival Overview
Venerated 11th-century wandering dervish and lyric poet whose passionate, rustic do-bayti quatrains became foundation stones of Persian folk singing.
Biographical Record
Baba Taher Oryan lived as a wandering ascetic dervish in Hamadan; his epithet 'Oryan' (The Naked) denoted his absolute detachment from worldly garments, wealth, and social pretension. When the Seljuk Sultan Tughril Beg visited Hamadan in 1055, he sought out Baba Taher, who famously admonished the supreme conqueror to govern with justice and fear God.
Baba Taher composed his poignant do-bayti (four-line stanzas) in the local Luri/Fahlaweyat dialect rather than courtly Persian. Expressing mystical heartbreak, rustic natural imagery, and yearning for divine union, his quatrains have been sung by Iranian bards to the accompaniment of the tanbur and setar for a thousand years.
