Biographical Record

Murlidhar 'Baba' Amte abandoned a lucrative legal practice and a life of hunting and luxury after encountering a dying leprosy patient on a rainy roadside. Deeply ashamed of his initial fear, he trained in leprosy medical treatment at the Calcutta School of Tropical Medicine.

In 1949, Amte established Anandwan on barren scrubland with six leprosy patients and an old lame cow, cultivating it into a self-sufficient community with schools, hospitals, and agricultural farms run by patients themselves. He also led peace marches across India and joined the Narmada Bachao Andolan environmental movement.
