Archival Overview
Dey of Algiers from 1710 to 1718 who unified the offices of Dey and Pasha, expelled the Ottoman imperial envoy, and established de facto sovereign independence for the Regency of Algiers.
Biographical Record
Baba Ali Chaouch came to power in 1710 amidst civil friction between the Janissary corps and the Ottoman Pasha. In a historic act of political sovereignty, he refused to permit the sultan's newly appointed Pasha to land in Algiers, sending him back to Istanbul on the same ship.
He unified the executive, military, and naval commands under the title of Dey-Pasha, compelling the Ottoman Sublime Porte to recognize the autonomous status of Algiers. He concluded sovereign diplomatic treaties with Britain, France, and the Dutch Republic as an equal power.
