Biographical Record
Educated at Cambridge and earning his doctorate in law at the University of Bordeaux, Dr. Ba Maw (1893–1977) rose to national fame in 1931 by defending peasant rebel leader Saya San. In 1937, he was elected the first Premier of Burma under the British colonial constitution.
Imprisoned by the British for anti-war agitation, he escaped in 1942 and was appointed Head of State of the nominally independent State of Burma under Japanese auspices in 1943. His wartime administration provided cover for General Aung San to organize the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League.
