Biographical Record

Born Li Yaotang, Ba Jin (1904–2005) adopted his pen name from Russian anarchist philosophers Bakunin and Kropotkin. In 1933, he published 'Jia' ('Family'), depicting the painful struggles of young intellectuals against tyrannical Confucian clan patriarchy in Chengdu.

Ba Jin translated Ivan Turgenev and Peter Kropotkin into Chinese. In his old age, he published 'Suixianglu' ('Random Thoughts'), candidly confronting the collective trauma of the Cultural Revolution and proposing a National Museum to preserve its historical lessons.
