Pioneer of modern easel painting in Algeria, uncle of writer Mouloud Mammeri, who exhibited in Paris and Rabat and captured the sunlight on mountain villages.
Biographical Record
Azouaou Mammeri was born in the picturesque mountain village of Taourirt Mimoun in Beni Yenni. Refusing European orientalist stereotypes, he became the first indigenous Algerian artist to master Western easel painting and oil techniques while depicting the authentic architectural purity and vibrant light of his homeland.
Mammeri held celebrated solo exhibitions in Paris, Algiers, and Rabat in the 1920s and 1930s, gaining international acclaim. As regional inspector of arts, he mentored generations of young Maghrebi painters, including his nephew, the renowned novelist and anthropologist Mouloud Mammeri.
