Biographical Record
Aziz Belal was born in Beni Mellal and graduated from the University of Grenoble with a doctoral state thesis on imperialism and Moroccan economic structures. As dean and professor at Mohammed V University in Rabat, he founded the Association of Moroccan Economists.
His celebrated 1980 work, Développement et facteurs non-économiques, argued that genuine national development required cultural emancipation, popular participation, and social solidarity rather than mere capital accumulation. His sudden death in a hotel fire in Chicago in 1982 was mourned across international academic and progressive circles.
