Archival Overview
Master lyric poet and academician whose philosophical epic 'Abul Ala Al-Ma'arri' and melancholic folk verses captured the eternal longing and sorrows of the Armenian people.
Biographical Record
Avetik Isahakyan was born on October 31, 1875, near Alexandropol (Gyumri). Educated at the Gevorkian Seminary and the University of Leipzig, Isahakyan was arrested repeatedly by Tsarist authorities for his active involvement in the Armenian national liberation movement.
His 1909 philosophical masterpiece, Abul Ala Al-Ma'arri, inspired by the blind medieval Arab poet, channeled existential yearning for freedom and cosmic justice. After living abroad in Switzerland, France, and Italy for decades, he returned triumphantly to Soviet Armenia in 1936, serving as President of the Writers' Union until his death and revered as the living conscience of the nation.
