"The Celtic war-cry echoed on African hills until fate silenced the assembly."

Archival Overview

Gallic mercenary chieftain fluent in Phoenician who commanded 2,000 Gallic cavalrymen in the Mercenary War, instrumental in persuading the troops to execute Carthaginian ambassadors.

Biographical Record

Autaritus was the leader of the Gallic contingent in the Carthaginian armed forces during the First Punic War. Unique among foreign mercenaries for having learned fluent Punic, he acted as a persuasive orator among the multi-ethnic mercenary regiments.

When Gisco arrived with peace offerings, Autaritus delivered a fiery speech convincing the assembly that any Carthaginian envoy was a spy, leading directly to the torture and mutilation of Gisco. Captured at the Defile of the Saw, he was crucified opposite the walls of Tunis in 238 BC.
