Born in Thagaste in Roman Numidia to a Christian mother, Monica, and a pagan father, Augustine pursued classical rhetoric in Carthage before embracing Manichaeism and Neo-Platonism. His dramatic intellectual conversion in Milan under Bishop Ambrose in 386 CE culminated in his consecration as Bishop of Hippo Regius in North Africa.
For thirty-five years he shepherded his congregation through political instability and sectarian schisms, producing colossal treatises on the Trinity, free will, and history. During the Vandal siege of Hippo in 430 CE, he passed away, his manuscripts preserved to become the foundational pillar of Western theology.
