"The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live. True artists are those who see the invisible through the visible. Sculpting is not copying; it is breathing life into matter."

Archival Overview

Supreme giant of modern sculpture who resurrected the emotional and psychological vitality of Michelangelo and Donatello, creating monumental masterpieces like The Thinker, The Gates of Hell, and The Burghers of Calais.

Biographical Record

Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) fundamentally liberated Western sculpture from academic decorative smoothness and allegorical clichés. Rejecting the sterile polish of the École des Beaux-Arts, Rodin preserved the tactile gouges, rough tool marks, and organic lumps of clay, endowing bronze and marble with raw muscular vitality, inner emotional turmoil, and psychological realism.

In 1880, Rodin was commissioned to design The Gates of Hell, an epic sculptural portal inspired by Dante's Inferno that occupied him for thirty-seven years. From this colossal project emerged some of the world's most famous freestanding bronze sculptures: The Thinker (*Le Penseur*), The Kiss, and The Three Shades. His civic monument The Burghers of Calais (1889) placed heroes on ground level, sharing their raw human terror and sacrifice directly with the viewer.
