Biographical Record
August Macke was one of the youngest and most exceptionally gifted figures of German Expressionism. Unlike the brooding, existential tone of Die Brücke, Macke's vision was joyful and harmonious, portraying bourgeois promenades, parks, shop windows, and zoo animals bathed in crystalline light.
In April 1914, Macke embarked on a historic journey to Tunisia with Paul Klee and Louis Moilliet. The luminous North African sun catalyzed a profound breakthrough in his watercolor technique, producing works of pure prismatic beauty. Just five months later, Macke was killed on the Western Front in Champagne at the age of 27.
