"We were 22 young men with faith in our hearts and love for Algeria; history answered our call."

Archival Overview

Founding member of the Historic 22, younger brother of OS founder Mohamed Belouizdad, who was one of the last surviving architects of the November 1954 revolution.

Biographical Record

Athmane Belouizdad was born in the patriotic working-class neighborhood of Belcourt in Algiers. Immersed in the nationalist movement from boyhood under the mentorship of his legendary older brother Mohamed Belouizdad (the creator of the Special Organization), Athmane joined the clandestine revolutionary apparatus.

In June 1954, at age 25, he participated in the historic Meeting of the 22 in Algiers. Arrested on November 7, 1954, he endured years of brutal torture in colonial prisons without breaking. Surviving until January 2022, he was among the final surviving members of the Historic 22, revered as a living monument of Algerian statehood.
