Archival Overview
Master filmmaker who revolutionized Egyptian cinema in the 1980s as the pioneer of Neo-Realism, directing monumental social masterworks including The Bus Driver and The Innocent.
Biographical Record
Hailing from Sohag in Upper Egypt, Atef El-Tayeb graduated from the Higher Institute of Cinema in Cairo in 1970. In 1982, his landmark film Sawaq El-Utubis (The Bus Driver) shocked the cinema world with its raw, unflinching depiction of moral decay following the Open Door economic policy.
Over a brilliant, feverish 13-year career directing 21 films, including Al-Baree' (The Innocent) and Ded El-Hokoma (Against the Government), he gave voice to the working-class struggle against bureaucratic corruption before dying during heart surgery at age 47.
