"Tango is not for feet; it is for ears and the soul. My music is tango, but it is tango with the blood and fury of modern times."

Archival Overview

Revolutionary Argentine tango composer and bandoneon virtuoso who transformed traditional tango into Nuevo Tango by fusing it with jazz harmonies, dissonant counterpoint, and classical forms in Libertango and Adiós Nonino.

Biographical Record

Astor Pantaleón Piazzolla (1921–1992) grew up in Greenwich Village, New York, where his father bought him his first bandoneon at eight. Playing alongside Carlos Gardel as a teenager in 1934, Piazzolla returned to Buenos Aires to play in Aníbal Troilo's famous tango orchestra while studying classical composition under Alberto Ginastera.

In 1954, legendary French teacher Nadia Boulanger heard him play a tango and famously insisted that Piazzolla discard classical imitation to pursue his true destiny. Back in Argentina, Piazzolla formed his revolutionary Quinteto Nuevo Tango, introducing electric guitar, complex fugues, and syncopated accents. Initially reviled by tango traditionalists, Piazzolla's electrifying masterworks—such as Libertango, Oblivion, and Adiós Nonino—conquered concert halls globally.
