Archival Overview

Moroccan Amazigh commander of the Ait Atta confederation who led the epic resistance at the Battle of Bougafer in 1933, halting the elite French Foreign Legion and aviation with sheer tactical brilliance.

Biographical Record

Assou Oubasslam (c. 1890–1960) was elected supreme military leader (Amghar n'Ufella) of the fierce Ait Atta nomadic confederation in the Anti-Atlas mountains. In early 1933, French colonial armies under Generals Huré and Catroux launched Operation Saghro with 83,000 troops, 44 warplanes, and heavy artillery to complete the 'pacification' of Morocco.

Oubasslam entrenched 4,000 warriors and their families in the natural basalt citadel of Jbel Bougafer. For over forty days, despite relentless aerial bombardment, his sharpshooters repelled waves of colonial attacks, killing legendary French commander Captain Henri de Bournazel. He negotiated an honorable ceasefire on March 25, 1933, preserving tribal customs and autonomy.
