"To write is to step outside the walls of silence, to claim the light for all the women who were silenced."

Archival Overview

Foremost Algerian novelist, essayist, and filmmaker who gave voice to Algerian women silenced by colonialism and patriarchy, becoming the first writer from North Africa elected to the Académie Française in 2005.

Biographical Record

Born Fatima-Zohra Imalayene in Cherchell, Assia Djebar (1936–2015) was the first Algerian woman admitted to the prestigious École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1955. Actively supporting the Algerian student strike for the FLN, she published her debut novel La Soif under a pseudonym at age twenty-one.

Djebar created a monumental body of feminist and postcolonial literature, including Fantasia: An Algerian Cavalcade (L'Amour, la fantasia, 1985) and Far from Medina, weaving together French archival accounts of the 1830 conquest with oral testimonies of Algerian peasant women fighters. Her 1978 film La Nouba des femmes du Mont Chenoua won the International Critics' Prize at the Venice Film Festival.
