Archival Overview
Great 6th-century BCE King of Kush who ruled from Napata, known from the magnificent Aspelta Election and Coronation Stelae, who built monumental temples and whose pyramid at Nuri is one of Nubia's finest monuments.
Biographical Record
Son of King Senkamanisken and Queen Nasalsa, Aspelta was elected King of Kush around 600 BCE through divine oracle at the Temple of Amun at Jebel Barkal, as recorded on his famous Coronation Stele (now in the Cairo Museum). In 593 BCE, he defended Nubia against an invasion by 26th-Dynasty Pharaoh Psamtik II.
He consolidated Kushite imperial trade, fortified Meroë as a second capital, and constructed Pyramid Nu. 8 at the royal necropolis of Nuri, the second-largest pyramid in Sudan. His burial chamber was found richly decorated with complete spells from the Egyptian Book of the Dead carved into the stone walls.
