Legendary Syrian-Egyptian singer and actress, sister of Farid al-Atrash, whose soaring, operatic vocal range and glamorous cinema roles made her one of the supreme divas of the Arab Golden Age before her mysterious death at age thirty-one.
Biographical Record
Born Amal al-Atrash into the noble Druze royal family of Jabal al-Druze, she fled French bombardment with her mother and brothers to Cairo in 1923. Discovered by maestros Dawood Hosni and Mohamed El Qasabgi, she adopted the stage name Asmahan, mesmerizing audiences with a breathtaking three-octave vocal range that seamlessly fused Arabic microtones with Western operatic technique.
Asmahan starred in historic musical films like Intisar al-Shabab (1941) alongside her brother Farid al-Atrash and Gharam wa Intiqam (1944). During World War II, she was recruited by British Allied intelligence to persuade Druze leaders to support Allied forces against Vichy French troops in Syria. On July 14, 1944, while driving to the Ras El Bar resort, her car mysteriously plunged into a deep Nile irrigation canal, killing her at thirty-one.
