Archival Overview

Visionary Emperor of the Songhai Empire who expanded the state into the largest empire in West African history. Created an efficient administrative bureaucracy, standardized weights and measures, and established the intellectual golden age of Gao and Timbuktu.

Biographical Record

Seizing power following the death of Sonni Ali Ber, Askia Muhammad reorganized Songhai with royal ministries for agriculture, finance, justice, and the navy of the Niger River. Undertaking a magnificent pilgrimage to Mecca in 1496, he was designated Caliph of the Western Sudan by the Sharif of Mecca.

He endowed Sankore University with generous stipends for scholars, astronomers, and jurists, making books the most lucrative commodity in the empire. His pyramidal mudbrick tomb at Gao stands as a UNESCO World Heritage monument.
