Biographical Record
Born Muhammad Ture, Askia the Great (c. 1443–1538) seized power in 1493, establishing the Askia Dynasty. In 1496, he undertook a legendary pilgrimage to Mecca with 300,000 pieces of gold and an escort of 1,500 soldiers, receiving appointment as Caliph of the Western Sudan from the Sharif of Mecca.
Askia built an efficient bureaucratic administration with professional ministries of finance, agriculture, and navy. He heavily funded the Sankore University in Timbuktu, attracting scholars, jurists, and scientists from Cairo, Fez, and Granada. His mud-brick pyramid tomb in Gao is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
