Archival Overview
Pioneering Icelandic painter who was the first professional artist in Iceland to make painting his sole livelihood, capturing Mount Hekla, glaciers, and folklore in luminous watercolors and oils.
Biographical Record
Ásgrímur Jónsson was born on March 4, 1876, on the farm Rútsstaðir in Flói. Moving to Copenhagen in 1897, he worked as a house painter before being admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1900, traveling to Italy to study classical daylight.
Returning to Iceland in 1909, Jónsson held the first public art exhibitions in Reykjavík, opening his countrymen's eyes to the color and grandeur of their own volcanic landscapes. His watercolors of Mount Hekla, Tindfjallajökull, and scenes from Icelandic folktales featuring trolls and hidden people (huldufólk) laid the foundation for modern Icelandic fine art. He bequeathed his studio home and entire art collection to the Icelandic nation.
