Archival Overview
King of northern Mauretania based at Tingis (Tangier), besieged and overthrown around 81 BCE during the intervention of Roman general Quintus Sertorius.
Biographical Record
King Ascalis ruled the northern kingdom of the Mauri along the Strait of Gibraltar. Recorded by Plutarch in his Life of Sertorius, Ascalis became entangled in the Roman civil wars between the Marian and Sullan factions.
When his subjects revolted against his harsh rule, the Marian general Sertorius crossed from Spain, defeated Ascalis's general Paccianus, and besieged Ascalis inside the citadel of Tingis, leading to the liberation of the city and Sertorius's famous excavation of the legendary tomb of Antaeus.
