Great Gandharan Buddhist master who with his brother Vasubandhu founded the Yogacara (Vijnanavada / Mind-Only) school of Mahayana Buddhism, authoring the 'Yogacarabhumi-Sastra'.

Biographical Record

Asanga (c. 300–370 CE) spent twelve years in mountain caves meditating upon the future Buddha Maitreya, achieving direct visionary realization of Mahayana ultimate reality.

He formulated the philosophical doctrine that external phenomena are projections of consciousness (Cittamatra), converting his brilliant younger brother Vasubandhu to Mahayana.
