Archival Overview

Legendary Ottoman-Algerian privateer known as 'Redbeard' (Baba Aruj) who rescued thousands of Andalusian Muslims and Jews from Spain, seized Algiers in 1516, and founded the Regency of Algiers.

Biographical Record

Aruj Reis (c. 1474–1518) was the son of an Ottoman Greek potter on Lesbos. Captured by the Knights of Saint John in youth, he escaped and built a fearsome corsair fleet in the western Mediterranean, rescuing over 70,000 Morisco refugees following the fall of Granada, earning the affectionate name 'Baba Aruj' (Father Aruj).

In 1516, invited by the sheikh of Algiers to liberate the port from Spanish fortresses (the Peñón), Aruj seized Algiers, declared himself Sultan, and annexed central Algeria. Marching to liberate Tlemcen from a Spanish puppet ruler, he was besieged at the Mechouar and died heroically covering his men's retreat at the Rio Salado in May 1518.
