Archival Overview
Groundbreaking Belgian civil engineer and professor at the Catholic University of Leuven who invented the Vierendeel truss in 1896, eliminating diagonal bracing in bridge engineering with rigid rectangular frames.
Biographical Record
Graduating in civil engineering from Leuven, Vierendeel was appointed chief engineer of the Province of West Flanders. In 1896, he challenged conventional structural engineering by patenting a revolutionary rigid frame truss with rigid joints and rectangular openings, dispensing with traditional triangular diagonal bracing.
In 1902, he proved the structural safety of his design by constructing the first Vierendeel bridge over the Scheldt at Avelgem. Today, Vierendeel trusses are utilized worldwide in railway bridges, high-rise skyscrapers, and architectural spans for their clean interior sightlines and structural efficiency.
